Kiteboarding
October 10th 2006 20:23
Well the season is nearly here (in Melbourne) and im hanging. After living in Noosa heads and being spoiled with near all year round kiting i have suffered since moving to my hometown of Melb.
If you refer to my previous post you will be aware i have being stuffing my face with fast food, so also taking away my main form of exercise has given me a nice bit of insulation around the mid section.
Melb is not in my opinion as good a spot to kite as th Sunshine Coast, but wind is wind, even if it is cold and stinky like Melb can be. The scene is also very different, a much older "Noddy" crew, Noosa was a close crew that stuck together and in the past 12 months an influx of young guys had taken up the sport and are kicking hard.
Well are you new to kiting? Some tips from me to you.
DONT use a board leash!
DONT fly your kite in a park to learn how it works!
DONT be a fool and think you can learn how to kite by yourself!
DONT be a cock head and ruin a session for everyone else by learning in the middle of the spot the experienced kiters are sailing
DONT jump right next to the beach
DO have at least one lesson
DO take your time and rig your kite properly
DO ask a local before kiting in an new location
DO have fun and stay safe
Kiteboarding is not that hard to learn, its easier in general than Windsurfing or surfing. But it is potentially VERY DANGEROUS, people do die and do get very badly injured on a regular basis. So be aware you are NOT in control of the wind, you are trying to harness its energy, keep an eye out for squals, keep your head or it may get slammed into the side of a house or maybe through a barbed wire fence at 50kmh, both have happened in the country!
Well after the Doom and Gloom if you have any questions just ask, its a wicked sport, most of the crew are great and dont be afraid to come up and say hi, most of us would prefer you asked questions, even if you think they are dumb, we went through the same pain learning and dont mind sharing that with you.
Cheers
